2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, where among other things Christians came together to think about and articulate what it means that Jesus is fully God and fully human. These reflections were concretized in a short affirmation of faith that became a core statement of central Christian belief—the Nicene Creed. This study will explore the biblical significance contained in the statements confessed there.

Our focus this spring is on the Book of Genesis. We will explore the significance of the Bible’s description of the beauty and meaning of creation in Genesis 1-2, followed by humanity’s willful rebellion against God in Genesis 3-11. We will study God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah and journey with them through life’s struggles and God’s faithfulness (Genesis 12-25). From there we will study Jacob and Joseph’s painful family dynamics and the difference between self-reliance and the Lord’s faithfulness (Genesis 25-50).

Using Nancy Guthrie's excellent study, Even Better Than Eden, we will examine nine key biblical themes: wilderness, the tree, His image, clothing, the Bridegroom, Sabbath, offspring, a dwelling place, and the City. We will explore how these themes tell us the story of the Bible, the story of our glorious future with Christ, and the story of who we are here and now. Above all, these themes reveal the Author who is telling us His story and ours even as it gloriously unfolds. Spoiler alert: the ending is beyond our best and wildest hopes and dreams.
